Time to Unplug

We're taking the advice of fellow bloggers Jennifer Poe of Important Chocolate and Danyelle Little of The Cubicle Chick and taking some time offline.  It doesn't mean we're going to totally disavow the Internet, emails, or social media, but take the time to put life in perspective as we create a work/life balance.

There have been times when we have been way out of balance on either side, and it makes sense to reduce the "noise" so that we can find "clarity".  We'll continue to update the blog 1-2 times a week; check emails at least twice a day during week and once on weekends; make comments and interact on social media at least once a day during the week and unplug completely on weekends; and promote our  E-bookTake A Leap Career Mentoring Program, and WCP, LLC projects in online and offline platforms.  And if you need to get in touch with us outside of email or social media, a phone call is nice.  If you don't have our number, contact us via email at weconnectedprod[at]gmail[dot]com and we'll be glad to share our deets.

Here are some reasons you might find it necessary to unplug:

#1)  Refocus- whether in career or personal life, there are times you will find yourself needing to refocus.  For us, we find it in reading motivational books and magazines, talking to our Mentors, and in prayer.  Refocusing gives us new, thought-provoking, and think-out-the box ideas.  The creative juices are explosive.  Especially when you follow this tip along with #2.

#2)  Healthy lifestyle- as soon as we're off from work, we walk around our neighborhood trail.  Not only do we walk during the week, but also on weekends and vacations.  We also juice our fruits and veggies for instant and long lasting energy throughout the day.  We no longer feel sluggish at 2pm.  Taking time to unplug allows us to exercise, eat healthy, and put our energy into a strong body and mind.

#3)  Reclaim family time- we love finding time to spend with family whether in church, family gatherings, or sporting events.  There's nothing like being in the present with the ones we love.  And as the jet setting twins will have it, outside of SC, we also find time to visit distant relatives and often make trips to NY, NJ, TX, and NC.  Family means the world to us, and if we had a choice as to how to spend a day, it'll be with family.

What are some reasons you find it necessary to unplug?  Can you do it for a day? 3-days? 7-days? An entire month? Longer?  Please share a comment below.

5 Actions to Take A Leap Into a New Career

These are five actions that will get you in ACTION mode as you Take A Leap into a New Career.

1) Find a Mentor - You don't have to know someone personally. Read about him/her in a book or online (Follow them on Twitter/Facebook). You can learn a lot by what they say and do. Then you put your own spin on it.  To find out more about the benefits of working with a Mentor/Career Coach, you can sign-up for our Take A Leap Career Mentoring Program and/or buy our Take A Leap E-book for $2.99 (link to right).

2) Take your hobby more seriously-  If you like photography then pitch your photos to a local or national magazine. If you want to be a writer, start your own blog about what you are passionate about. Add Google AdSense to earn money with your blog.  Be a guest blogger on other sites.

3) To take your new career to the next level, work on it at night and/or weekends. Many people started their own business moonlighting.  Be careful not to conduct your new career work at your "Day Job."

4) Go back to school or get trained in your new field-   Going back to school do not have to mean just attending a four year College.  It can also mean a two year degree, certificate, or independent study abroad trip (ie...culinary, foreign language).

5) Save money from your "Day Job" that is then forward to a new account set up for your new career.

BETravel Twitter Chat

During my lunch break this past Wednesday, I participated in the BETravel Twitter Chat sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Board (Twitter @GoToBermuda).  Many Black Enterprise readers and followers on Twitter were invited to participate. I've been a Black Enterprise reader for over 20 years.  I was astonished to find that I knew and personally met two out of the three special guests.  And of course it was about Travel, so I gladly participated in the Chat.

It was moderated by Suncear Scretchen (Twitter @ConsciousChick1). Special guests were Evita Robinson from NomadnessTV(Twitter @NomadnessTribe) and Andrea Adams (Twitter @AndreaAdams) & Teri Johnson(Twitter @TravelistaTeri) from TravelistaTV.

Questions came in as to how to save on a family vacation to where to look online for airline tickets.  Many advised that to save on family vacations to not stay at hotels, and use Airbnb and VRBO instead.  We Connected Productions,  LLC have have used and mentioned on this site many times apartments and houses you can stay at for less than the price of a hotel.  As for purchasing airline tickets, I knew about Sky Scanner, but never heard of Adioso.  The best days to purchase tickets are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Those two days are also the best days to fly out and return on Saturdays.

Chat participants asked about travel jobs and discussed what travel mean to them. I have personally thought of being a full-time travel writer/blogger.  Travel means to me getting out of my comfort zone and learning about another country's culture, in which in America I may get only one point of view. I realize we are all the same and want many of the same things.

As I read many of the responses, it came to a realization that many of the chat participants thought they were alone in wanting to travel. Specifically to travel internationally. They never knew there was so many "Brown travelers". They will now join the Tribe with Nomadness on Facebook. They started following each other on Twitter so they can have a travel buddy the next time they travel. I did the same, following many from the chat. I replied to a fellow chat participate who said, "Love to pair my love of running with my love of travel", to follow a friend of mine training to run The Great Wall of China in May 2014.  Special guest Evita from NomadnessTV urged her to connect as well.  It turned out my friend and the chat participant with a desire to combine running and travel both reside in California.

The BETravel Twitter Chat got people to not only talk about travel but actually do it.  Go!!  Start with this contest for a trip for 2 to Bermuda.

It was a great and enjoyable Chat.  Can't wait until the next one.

Guest Post: Traveling Abroad As A Family

Traveling with loved ones can be an exciting, unforgettable time. It can, however, also be a big headache if proper planning and accommodations aren’t made. Below are some things you should consider for a smooth and memorable vacation:

Destination and Accommodations

Plan accordingly for age-appropriate destinations for children. Consider their safety, the busyness of the city, fun attractions for kids and the affordability of the place you are visiting.
Also consider using a vacation rental instead of booking a hotel – it is a great way to get a feel of how the locals live. You can save some money too by looking for vacation rentals on sites such as Vrbo or Airbnb for affordable accommodation options for your family.

Air Travel

When it comes to air travel, try booking window seats so that the family can stay together and children have a little more freedom and space from other passengers. If anyone in your family has special needs, be sure to notify the airline you are using beforehand. They will most likely be able to accommodate any special requests that you may have.

Packing

Don’t pack anything you can’t carry. Ancient streets often mean cobbled or unevenly paved roads, making rolling backpacks difficult to navigate. And, If you go to gems of cities such as Florence, Italy, the buildings stay true to their old world appeal, meaning tiny elevators or no elevators at all. Hauling heavy luggage up many flights of stairs may be a good workout, but it is nonetheless a hassle.

Moreover, if you’re planning a trip across many cities via train or plane, lugging your luggage from one form of transport to another is a burden.

Also, instead of packing your whole closet, pack a few key clothing pieces for you and your family that can be mixed and matched effortlessly with other easy-to-wash clothing items.

A favorite toy can keep a child company during a long trip, so be sure to include this with your packing. Also remember to pack any necessary medications and keep your family’s immune systems strong and healthy with plenty of vitamin C.

Budget

There will be plenty of souvenirs that will be tempting to buy; however, it is important to keep a budget for your expenses. Research beforehand for popular cheap eats that you know your children will enjoy. If your children are picky and you’re worried they won’t be interested in the local food you want to try, consider telling them about the places you hope to visit and “hype” up the food, so they’ll be excited to try it when it comes. You can also pack familiar snacks from home that the children already like in case the local cuisine isn’t to their liking.

Keep in mind

Being in close parameters with people who know you well (and therefore, know how to push your buttons) can take its toll on anyone, especially after a long day of traveling. While traveling is supposed to be a form of a getaway, there is always a chance of getting on each other’s nerves. Just be aware of this possibility and step outside (safely, don’t get lost!) for a breather when needed.

Traveling has so many benefits, especially for children. When kids have the opportunity to travel, they gain exposure to different cultures and languages, and they gain a better appreciation for their own culture and other cultures’ ways of living. Such exposure to different languages is brain expanding, and promotes a sense of adventure and creative thinking.

Safety

It is important before your trip that you discuss safety measures with your family, such as
what to do when a family member gets lost. If you’re bringing electronic devices, have each others’ phone numbers ready, and have local family members or authorities’ numbers ready for emergencies.

Traveling can be a fulfilling, grand adventure that creates bonds with your family. By planning ahead and being prepared, you and your family can have a shared experience that you won’t soon forget.

Virginia Cunningham is a freelance writer and mother of three who loves traveling abroad with her entire family. She has been all over the world with her children, and every experience has been enjoyable because they were always well-prepared.

Take A Leap Phase II

Streets of Quebec City via MotoVermont.com
In a blog post from a few weeks ago on stepping out on faith, we shared briefly that we will be expanding our Take A Leap concept to include two additional areas, careers & education and financial planning.  The Career Mentoring Program website will be unveiled in mid-June along with an E-book that will be available for $5.99 or when you pay the $50 deposit fee to participate in the career mentoring program, the E-book will be included as a bonus.  The orientation will be held mid-August for those local to Columbia, SC.
Waterfront view of Quebec City via Flickr

Those who are unable to attend in person will be provided materials via email within 24 hours of the conclusion of the orientation.  The program will officially begin in September with a number of assignments that Mentees must complete personally and in collaboration with their assigned Mentor.  In addition, Mentees will be preparing for their self-funded international trip.  We would like to formally announce that the international retreat location will be in Quebec City, Canada from January 17-January 20, 2014.  Videos from the international retreat will be documented for future segments of the Take A Leap webseries.  We are currently seeking locally and world-wide for Mentors and Mentees.  Please contact us at weconnectedprod[at]gmail.com for more information.

Here's To Your Health

Monaco, France
Traveling have often caused havoc on people's nutritional habits and overall health.  We talked in a previous post about health precautions to take in consideration as you head to your destination. Now we want to address staying on top of your nutritional health at your destination.

Often times, people are quick to go off their diet or nutritional plan when they are on vacation.  Sometimes it's because they are in unfamiliar surroundings, and they don't have the time to find an appropriate place to eat.  Other times it's because they are on the go, go, go, and it's just easier to grab a bite to eat from a popular fast food chain. Or maybe you are on a nutritional regiment, and vacation is a time to "blow it off".

We're sure you've heard these "excuses" before.  So we thought we'll give you some tips on how to stay healthy on the road and at your travel destination.

Sandwiches & Peanuts
#1 Bring drinks and snacks. The items may differ based on mode of transportation, but the ideal foods to have on hand are fruits, hand-made sandwiches, nuts and trail mixes, and water.  Carbonates, cookies, and chips should be consumed in moderation.

#2) Shop at the local grocery store for fresh foods.  It is interesting to find foods that may not be readily accessible in your hometown. We have tried fruits, veggies, and local delicacies that we never heard of in South Carolina during visits to Italy and China food markets. This is also a great time to learn the local language if you're in an international destination.

#3) Keep food allergies and nutritional plans in mind.  There are so many variety of foods to be found in restaurants, and whether you order by the plate or eat from the buffet line, there are bound to be foods you may question as it relates to your health.  If you know you have a food allergy, it may be best to order from the menu.  Those on specific nutritional plans such as vegetarian, vegan, organic, etc should identify restaurants of their liking with a simple Google search or by utilizing a travel guide.  It also helps if you have an advance look at the menu via the restaurant's website or by talking to the host.

#4) If children are with you, make sure they eat a well-balanced meal.  Sugary drinks, burgers, and pizza are common place at amusement parks and other major attractions.  They can also break the bank and make your child "less energetic" in the long-run.  Limit the amount of these foods your child(ren) consume, and bring along plenty of fresh fruit and water, as long as they are permissible at the venue.  Check the website in advance.  If it is not permitted, bring what is (often a sealed bottled water), and once in the venue, seek out places to eat with a wide selection of foods.

The Pizza Rhonda made while in Italy (2009). Please eat in moderation.
What other tips or advice do you have to help you stay nutritionally healthy on the road?

What Would You Do with $25,000??

We Connected Productions, LLC were featured speakers at the True Dreams Showcase and Networking event held in Columbia, SC on the evening of Saturday, March 16.  It was a wonderful spirit-filled event, especially when it was revealed to us that our 2012 proposal was very strong, and had we asked for it, we could of received more than $25,000.  And while there was disappointment expressed by organizers in our low-ball proposal (we asked and were awarded $1000), we still feel no regrets.  Life is too short living in "woulda, coulda, shoulda".  If anything, it fueled confidence in us to not back down on future endeavours.

One of those future endeavours include retooling Take A Leap.  The show concept will stay in place and we will continue to travel and film.  We are seeking to expand the mission of Take A Leap with the inclusion of career mentorship with travel opportunities.  We have found that many adults are seeking help in forging a second or transitional career. And they are also in need of a good vacation.  This can be hard to do when you are in your mid-to-late 30's and are expected to continue on the upward latter of success in your current career. Or maybe you're afraid of financial instability. Or maybe you have far too many family obligations.

Well, there is help. Or there will be.  We will be partnering with persons in some of the most targeted second/transitional careers that adults are flocking to.  The mentorship partnership will last from 3-7 days, and will include domestic and international destinations.  We want to make the program affordable,  and need your help.

1) Please promote WCP, LLC services and businesses sponsorship opportunities as expressed in our most recent WCP, LLC blogpost.

2) Share with us suggested second/transitional careers AND favorite travel destination.  You can comment on this post or email us at weconnectedprod@gmail.com.

3) You can donate to Take A Leap at the link on the right panel of this blogsite and/or the link in the WCP, LLC blogsite for general production funds (equipment; current/future productions; etc.)  We've already had four persons donate in the last two weeks alone.

What would you do with $25,000? I know what we would do, and we are on a mission to raise that amount and more with your help and support.

God Bless,
Rhonda & Sharee

Thank You To The Prayer Warriors Out There

Sharee and I received our Oscar world wind itinerary early this morning from FGW Productions CEO, Stephanie Frederic. We will be attending many Pre-Oscar events (Uptown Magazine, Gospel Goes to Hollywood, etc) and overall preparation for the main event, The Oscars.

As I am to depart this evening at 5:30pm, and my sister tomorrow afternoon, we want to thank everyone who have prayed for us and with us in person or by phone. Others have simply said, "Have Fun", 'This is Your Season", "Enjoy the Moment". Anything is possible with God. Also, remember:

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!” ― Audrey Hepburn

Thank you to the staff at Midlands Technical College; Church family at Francis Burns United Methodist Church; friends; community people we don't even know; and of course our family. They have been supportive, even though at times they don't understand every detail of our coming and going.  They just know it is making a difference in the lives of others. That your dreams will come to fruition when preparation meets opportunity and it equates success. Be Blessed and Dream a little Bigger!!

Florence American Cemetery, San Gimignano, and a Winery Tour

We had a world wind couple of days. I'm going to post Monday's events. Tuesday's activities will be posted in the morning. Collette Vacations took us on a surprised tour to the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial. It is at this location where we were able to see the grave of original Tuskegee Airman, Captain Erwin Lawrence. His grave is among the more than 5000 men and women, including names on the Wall of the Missing, who died during the last phase of the Italian campaign from June 1944 to May 1945.

    San Gimignano

From there we went to the windy, but very scenic San Gimignano. Lots of shops, including La Buca for salsiccia cinghiale (wild boar sausage) which we read about in Doing Italians...Oops...Italy by The Delusional Divas'.

Finally, the part of the day that everybody was waiting for: WINE TASTING and it didn't disappoint. Chianti is the wine made in the Tuscany region. This particular brand was produced by Tenuta San Vito.

Tomorrow we will post about our visit into Florence and our first of three interviews here in Italy for Take A Leap with BET/AOL Travelista Host Andrea Adams.

With those who are not familiar with Take A Leap, we are chronicling the lives of African-American expats. The pilot episode will feature our interviews in Italy.

    Grazie,

    Columbia's First Thursdays

In the past several months, Columbia, SC has featured a fun and entertaining event called First Thursdays in the downtown business community.  The highlight of the event is that it featured the art and culture scene of the city.  Rhonda and I filmed some of the activities and put together two YouTube videos.  The two minute version was for my second assignment in the travel fimmaking course I'm taking via MatadorU.  The three minute version was our entry into the Brazil Travel Film Scholarship for an opportunity to film The Carnival and the locals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in February 2013.  Deadline to enter the film scholarship is October 15, 2012 at 2PM Australian Eastern Time.  The winning team will be announced November 6.  Fingers crossed and prayers up!!

Check out the video links noted above, and let us know your thoughts!!

Go After Your Dreams: ALL OF THEM

Over the last few weeks my sister and I have talked about what it would take to run our Film/TV/Webshow production company full-time.  We've been advised to increase the price of our DVDs, become a non-profit organization, or charge upfront producing fees rather than accepting no or deferred payment.  We are still not clear on which direction to go, but we know that dropping our full-time jobs is not an option. Or is it??

I talked to a gentleman today who decided to try his "luck" in NYC. Even though he had a life in church ministry and a teenage son he was leaving behind,  he went to NYC to chase after a dream of becoming an actor.  He first eased into it slowly.  He would go to NYC a week at a time to audition, then return to SC. Once he booked a few roles and saved the money to Take A Leap, he found an apartment outside the city, and took it to the next level. Commercials, Movies, TV, and Theatre.  He proved he could do it, and then returned home after two years.  He continues to act locally, and takes on work in NYC whenever he fits it in his schedule.  Other than that, he has returned to the hustle and bustle of full-time work; yet I could see in the twinkle of his eye, that Hollywood maybe calling him next.

The thought that has crossed my mind is maybe we can do the same.  At least one of us will have to keep our full-time job initially, while the other keep part-time employment and grows the business to full-time status.  I think 12-14 months is enough time to put a concrete plan in action and implement.  Then we'll reverse.  The one who took time off will return to full-time work, and the other will now take the same 12-14 months to grow the business even more.  Within two and half years, we would hope to be in a position to run the business full-time and be in the black financially (we're so in the red now).  If not, we'll both go back to full-time salaried work, and run our production company part-time as we're doing now.

Are you currently working in your dream job? If not, and you could leave your job today, what will you do?

12 Goals to Reach by Year End 2012

Martice with Black Girl in the Big World put out a challenge to create a list of 12 goals to accomplish by the end of 2012.  With 4 1/2 months to go before the year ends, we came up with our own list.

#1 Brand Take A Leap as a go to source within the travel blog community.  This includes establishing relationships with travel bloggers in an effort to promote each other's initiatives.  We supported Martice by purchasing Black Girl Travel T-shirts.  Our next effort will be partnering with Jennifer P of Imported Chocolate.  She will be assisting us in setting up a screening of our pilot episode of Take A Leap in NYC in early December.

#2 Sharee will obtain her first real estate client (outside of herself), and sell her townhome in Columbia, SC. She'll then use the monthly savings to fund her Roth 403b.

#3 Rhonda will start a blog dedicated to financial education, obtain 25 referrals for her ValuTeachers reps, and facilitate 10 solo financial education presentations.

#4 Speak the local language when we travel abroad to both Italy and China.  We're nervous about this, although we have taken a few months of Rosetta Stone's online lessons in Italian. Ciao!!

#5 Get to know Bronx, NY family members.  That's a side of the family we know very little about, and just as it is a whole lot of us down here, there are tons of cuzzos up there.

#6 Attend a Clemson University (our Alma mater) football game this Fall.

#7 Raise an additional $5000 for Take A Leap webseries with approaching September 1 deadline.

#8 Sell 100 copies of our four short films on DVD or via online.

#9 Establish a financial emergency fund.

#10 Pay down credit cards. It helps that we have 0% interest for more than a year.

#11 Do what we love.  The Holstee Manifesto states that "If you are looking for the love of your life, STOP; they will be waiting for you when you start doing the things you love".  Whether in work or play, hopefully we'll both be able to find that special someone.  Sharee's story is in the travel blog section.

#12 End the year in Shanghai, China!!!

These are our 12 goals, both shared and individual.  The year isn't over yet. What do you hope to accomplish??
