What Is My Passion Thursdays: Your Dreams Are Valid

"....no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid."

These were the final words that uttered from Oscar Winner Lupita Nyong'o speech after winning the golden statute for Best Supporting Actress for the film, "12 Years A Slave", which also won for Best Picture.

Nyong'o was raised in Kenya before coming to America. While many people may not cross the ocean to achieve their dreams, there is a point to be made that movement is key.  When pursing a dream, start in your community. Hit your mark in your small town or humble beginnings, and then spread your wings.  Share your dreams with with close family and friends (and influential strangers), and if naysayers persist, don't let them undervalue your aspirations.

We often share in this blog about your passions aligning with career aspirations, but your passions can be of a non-vocational matter too.  Maybe you want to visit a particular destination, or you need to manage your weight.  Those dreams are just as valid, and they invoke just as much passion.  You just have to put in the "work" and keep moving in the "right" direction.

What is My Passion Thursdays: Using Your Talents

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me.”

― Erma Bombeck

Are you using your talent(s)?

What Is My Passion Thursdays: Holstee Manifesto

A year and half ago, we posted a blog about the Holstee Manifesto.  To date, it is one of our most popular blogs in terms of numbers of views.  As we continue to promote What Is My Passion Thursdays, we thought we'll revisit the words of the manifesto.  May it help you as you continue to seek out your passions and purposeful career.

“This is your life. Do what you want and do it often.
If you don't like something, change it.
If you don't like your job, quit.
If you don't have enough time, stop watching TV.
If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love.
Stop analyzing, life is simple.
All emotions are beautiful.
When you eat, appreciate every last bite.
Life is simple.
Open your heart, mind and arms to new things and people, we are united in our differences.
Ask the next person you see what their passion is and share your inspiring dream with them.
Travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself.
Some opportunities only come once, seize them.
Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them, so go out and start creating.
Life is short, live your dream and wear your passion.”

Do you agree with the Holstee Manifesto?  Do you have your own manifesto that you follow?

What Is My Passion Thursdays: Zeborah Foulks of Doyhae Films

Zeborah Foulks
Filmmaker and Middle School Football Coach
A college football injury caused Zeborah to purse a second passion in media entertainment.  After 12 years in television broadcasting, Zeborah had a vision from God to write and direct his own movie. The faith-based, independent movie was filmed in his native Columbia, South Carolina.  It is entitled Safe House: A Christian Story, and will be screened at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, SC on Friday, January 31, at 7:30pm.

Other movies in Zeborah’s filmology include: “Angel of Mine”, “From the Shallow to the Deep", "Paranoid”, “Tyler Jenkins" and  "The Resolution Pact”.  Zeborah has not forgotten about his passion for sports and has been the head football coach at Crayton Middle School for the past 8 years, and has led the team to 6 championship games.

Here's more about Zeborah:
  • His passion is to walk right in the front of God, and his career choices are in both the arts entertainment and sports.
  • He considers himself a life coach and leader of men.
  • In the past he would goof off and not work as hard as he should, and the sacrifices to overcome the lack of focus were a necessary part of the process to be in where he is now.  Although in the moment, it had been tough; yet, the results have been extraordinary.
  • He believes every person has greatness within themselves, and the fear of exploring it won't kill it.  You will only die with it inside you.  Motivation, hard work, dedication, and faith in God are the tools to overcome your fear to take a leap, and you would be amazed at what happens

What Is Your Passion Thursdays: Meet Ayla Jenkins, BeautiControl Spa, Skin Specialist

Ayla is a college student who needed a way to not just make ends

meet but to pay her way through Undergrad and Medical School.

With the ultimate career goal of being a dermatologist, she knew

that student debt was inevitable.  So when BeautiControl found

her, she knew this is where God wanted her to be.  This was her

ticket to pay her way through school, but most rewarding was that

she knew she could help others whether it be reminder for them to

pamper and de-stress themselves, help them escape from financial

stress, or surrounding someone with empowering and encouraging

women, she knew this was the path for her and from then on she

did not look back!

What is your passion and purposeful career?
My passion has always been to help others. When I was 3 years old I remember my family called me Dr. Quack and I would run around with this doctor's kit full of bandages and help every one. At the same time I also would play in my mother's make up and love to make up my little sister. By the third grade I knew what I wanted to be. We had an assignment to tell our future career and my mother helped me figure out how to put my two loves together. Helping people and beauty: came out to dermatology!

What career path(s)  did you consider or pursued prior to your passion and purposeful career?
As of now I have partnered with BeautiControl to begin my career! I own my own mobile spa business. This is a way I can start helping women and men and teaching them to properly take care of their skin. I'm also practicing in the medical field as a medical receptionist tech. Until I complete my education to become a dermatologist these are the ways I practice to develop my skills so that I'm exceptional in my dream career!

What sacrifices did you make in pursuing your passion and purposeful career?
To gain success you have to train in sacrifice. The most valuable thing that I sacrificed would have to be leaving my home town of Chicago which housed my family, childhood and memories. I get to see them maybe three times a year. No regrets though; their my biggest motivation and support! As my mom always says, "Work hard now, play hard later!"

What advice would you give others who are fearful to Take A Leap into their passion and purposeful career.
If fear is what's stopping you from taking that leap into your passion that's when you know it's worth it.  For it is fear that leads to courage, from courage to confidence, from confidence to endurance, from it all comes the motivation to succeed. Follow your passion only that will lead to a fulfilled life. Do what you love!
